Metro Mattress to open new store in Greece
Mattress retailer opens five Rochester stores in the past five years; Quadruples total number of Upstate New York stores and employees since 2000
Upstate New York's largest mattress retailer, will open a new showroom and clearance center in the Rochester area the weekend of Aug. 1. The new store is located at 2649 W. Ridge Road in Greece across from the Blockbuster Video near Long Pond Road. It is located just a few blocks from Metro Mattress' former Greece location (2833 West Ridge Road, in the Ridgemont Plaza, next to Wegmans) and marks the first time the company will operate one of its Showroom/Regional Clearance Center outlets in the Rochester market.
The new store, which features the company's new showcase interior build-out measures nearly 4,000 square feet and is equipped with the latest cutting edge technology.
Over the past 34 years, the bedding specialty retailer has become a local institution in several Upstate New York markets including Syracuse/Central New York (11 stores), Rochester (9 stores), Buffalo (7 stores), Albany (5 stores), Utica (2 stores) and the Southern Tier (2 stores).
Metro Mattress currently employees 160 people at its 36 locations, which includes the recently opened Clay, N.Y., store. In 2000, there were only nine Metro Mattress stores and approximately 40 employees.
The majority of Metro's expansion began in the Syracuse, Rochester and Albany areas and then spread into the Buffalo market in 2007. In May 2008, Metro Mattress moved its former headquarters and clearance center in Liverpool to a larger building on John Glenn Boulevard. The new Showroom & Regional Clearance Center includes 5,000 square feet of corporate offices and a 25,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art distribution center.

In Upstate New York, the company has also been involved in several philanthropic activities donating mattresses to several shelters including a home for runaway/at risk teens in Western New York and a home for battered women in Central New York. Metro Mattress also serves as the presenting sponsor for the annual Jim Boeheim Golf Classic, which benefits Coaches vs. Cancer. In 2008, the inaugural tournament raised $75,000 to aid in research, education, advocacy and patient and family services through the American Cancer Society. The second annual tournament was held July 23 and raised more than $100,000.
In addition to its growth, Metro Mattress has implemented numerous sustainability "Green Initiatives" across the chain. The company has achieved a 30 percent reduction in paper usage in the past two years by transferring all intra-office forms electronically. In 2010, Metro Mattress plans to finalize its tree planting initiative, which will ensure the company replenishes the forests based on its level of paper consumption. The company's goal is to become a carbon neutral organization by 2011. Metro Mattress currently sells green-friendly, soy-based foam mattresses and is actively seeking to add to the list of environmentally friendly mattresses available in its stores.
Metro Mattress expects to open 10 additional stores within the next year including another Rochester location.
